A Viennese institution
The classic wine tavern called "Heuriger" exists since the end of the 18th century. In 1784, emperor Josef II. granted to the winemakers the right of serving the own produced wine without special concession in their winery. The difference between classic wine taverns and wine restaurants is, that the classic wine taverns have not opened all year long but only during periodic turns and they serve only a small selection of food on a buffet, beside their wine. The period of opening can be recognized when seeing a branch of pines above the entrance. Did you know: the word "Heuriger" is the term for the young wine of the actual year.
Gumpoldskirchen
Of course you will not find wine taverns only in Vienna but in all wine regions in Austria. The hotel Arnia is situated in one of them - in the wine region "Thermenregion". One of the most well known cities in this region ist Gumpoldskirchen, approx. 10 minutes drive from the hotel. Old wineries and narrow streets mark the view of this place.
