The oldest zoo in the world
The history of Tiergarten Schönbrunn goes back to Empress Maria Theresia and her husband Franz Stephan von Lothringen (Franz Stephan of Lorraine). Until the end of Maria Theresia's reign (Maria Theresia died in 1780, Franz Stephan in 1765), the Menagerie Schönbrunn was largely reserved for the Imperial family, although school classes were among the invited guests very soon after it was opened.
The face of the menagerie changed considerably in the late 19th century. Alois Kraus (1840-1926), who directed the zoo from 1879 to 1918, carried out a more animal- and visitor-friendly renovation of the historical facilities.
Since then, the oldest zoo in the world became one of the most beautiful and most modern ones, combining the historical baroque built volumes with most modern zoo architecture.
